If you live in Bogotá and you are thinking about a hair transplant, the logical first step is to look close to home. Bogotá is the largest city in Colombia and has plenty of options. So why would anyone take a flight to have the procedure in Medellín?
Before answering, one disclosure we think is fair: our only clinic is in El Poblado, Medellín. We have no location in Bogotá. That means we have an interest in you making the trip, so this guide tries to do the opposite of a sales pitch: explain what to compare, what to ask, and when the best choice for you is to stay in Bogotá.
Already leaning toward Medellín? Our hair transplant page for Bogotá patients walks through the full process, from the virtual assessment to the flight home.
Quick answer
- The city matters less than the team. A hair transplant is done once, and the result depends mostly on who plans and performs the surgery, how the donor area is managed, and whether the graft count is right.
- From Bogotá, Medellín is a 45 to 60 minute direct flight. Most Bogotá patients spend one or two nights in Medellín and fly home the day after the procedure.
- Our price is the same wherever you come from: US$1.40 per graft for standard FUE and DHI, US$1.50 for women's cases and US$1.70 for afro-textured hair, all-in. A 2,000-graft standard case comes to US$2,800.
- Add flights and a hotel to the trip budget; those are on you. The driver on procedure day is included.
- The trip is not worth it in every case. If you want every follow-up in person, if you have a medical condition that needs close local follow-up, or if you have already found a doctor in Bogotá you trust on clear terms, stay.
What actually changes between Bogotá and flying to Medellín
The technique (FUE or DHI), the local anesthesia and the recovery are the same in any city. What changes is the logistics and, above all, the clinic you choose. This table sums up the real differences between having the procedure at a Bogotá clinic and flying to Medellín with us:
| Factor | Clinic in Bogotá | Flying to Medellín (Colombia Care) |
|---|---|---|
| Assessment | Usually in person, sometimes virtual | Free and virtual from Bogotá, with photos reviewed by a physician |
| Price | Varies widely by clinic; some quote per session, others per graft | US$1.40 per graft standard, US$1.50 women, US$1.70 afro-textured, in writing before you travel |
| Who operates | Depends on the clinic: always ask | A physician on our team plans and performs the surgery |
| Extra costs | Local transport | Flights and hotel on you; procedure-day driver included |
| Time away from home | None | One or two nights in most cases |
| Follow-ups | In person, if the clinic offers them | Months 1, 3, 6 and 12 by photo and WhatsApp; in person whenever you are in Medellín |
| If something worries you | You can walk into the clinic | You message on WhatsApp; going back in person means another flight |
The last row is the honest downside of travelling. Most questions in the first months (redness, scabs, the shock loss of weeks 2 to 8) are resolved with photos. But if being able to sit in front of the doctor every time something worries you matters to you, that weighs in favor of a clinic close to home.
How much does a hair transplant cost in Bogotá?
We are not going to give you a number for "the Bogotá market." Prices vary from one clinic to the next, many clinics do not publish them, and quotes are not always comparable: some charge per session, some per graft, some for a package that does not state how many grafts it includes. Any average we gave you would be a guess.
What we can give you is our published price, which is the same for patients from Bogotá, Medellín or anywhere else:
| Grafts | Standard FUE or DHI (US$1.40/graft) | Women (US$1.50/graft) | Afro-textured (US$1.70/graft) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,500 | US$2,100 | US$2,250 | US$2,550 |
| 2,000 | US$2,800 | US$3,000 | US$3,400 |
| 2,500 | US$3,500 | US$3,750 | US$4,250 |
| 3,000 | US$4,200 | US$4,500 | US$5,100 |
The price includes surgery planned and performed by a physician, medications and the aftercare kit, the first wash at the clinic, the driver on procedure day and 12 months of follow-up on WhatsApp. It does not include flights or a hotel. The full table, including beard and eyebrows, is on our hair transplant cost in Colombia page.
To compare the full cost of travelling, add the Bogotá–Medellín ticket (which varies a lot with the date and how far ahead you book) and one or two hotel nights in El Poblado to the procedure price. With those three numbers you have a fair comparison against any Bogotá quote.
How to compare two quotes, from any city
A lower quote is only better if it includes the same things. Before deciding, ask every clinic, in Bogotá or in Medellín, these questions, and get the answers in writing:
- Who performs the surgery? Does a physician do the extraction and the implantation, or do technicians do part of the work? This is the question that separates clinics the most.
- Exactly how many grafts are included? A flat price with no graft count does not tell you what you are paying for. If the number varies a lot between clinics for the same case, ask why.
- What does the price include? Medications, aftercare kit, washes, follow-ups, PRP if offered. Whatever is not in writing is usually charged separately.
- How is the donor area protected? Taking too much from the back of the head in one session can leave it thin and limit a second procedure later.
- Is the provider registered? In Colombia, healthcare providers register in the REPS (Registro Especial de Prestadores de Servicios de Salud). You can ask for the registration and check it.
- Can I see results from cases like mine, with before photos and photos at 12 months, not just on surgery day?
- How do follow-ups work, and who do I message if I have a question?
If a Bogotá quote answers these seven questions well and earns your trust, it is a serious option. If a very cheap quote cannot answer the first or second question, be wary, whatever city it comes from.
When flying from Bogotá makes sense
The trip is usually worth it when several of these are true:
- You found a team whose work convinces you, with 12-month results from cases like yours, and that team is in Medellín.
- The price is clear and in writing before you buy a ticket, with the graft count and what it includes.
- You can take one or two days away from home. The procedure is outpatient, under local anesthesia, and you walk out the same day.
- You are comfortable with remote follow-ups. The month 1, 3, 6 and 12 checks are done by photo and WhatsApp.
- Discretion helps you. Some patients prefer to have the procedure outside the city where they live and work, and come back once the first days have passed.
When it is better to stay in Bogotá
And these are the cases where, honestly, we would recommend not travelling:
- You want every follow-up in person and the idea of handling questions through photos makes you anxious.
- You have a medical condition that needs close follow-up with your own doctors, or you take medications that need adjusting before and after surgery. In that case, talk to your doctor before planning any trip.
- You already have a doctor in Bogotá you trust who answers the questions above well, on similar terms.
- You are not yet sure you are a candidate. If your hair loss is very active or the cause is unclear, diagnosis and medical treatment come first, not the flight.
What the trip from Bogotá looks like, step by step
If you decide to look at the Medellín option, the process is simple and almost all of it happens before you leave home:
- Assessment from Bogotá. You send four photos (front, both sides, crown and back) through the virtual assessment or WhatsApp. A physician reviews them and replies with your candidacy, the recommended technique, the graft estimate and the all-in price, in writing.
- Dates and flight. Only once the plan convinces you do you choose dates and buy the ticket. There are daily direct flights between Bogotá and José María Córdova airport (MDE) in Rionegro.
- Arrival. The airport is 30 to 45 minutes from El Poblado depending on traffic. Most patients arrive the day before and stay at a hotel near the clinic.
- Procedure day. In-person consultation, then the procedure under local anesthesia, performed by your physician. The driver that day is included.
- Going home. First wash at the clinic and the flight home, usually the next day. A one-hour flight is compatible with a freshly operated scalp if you follow the aftercare instructions.
- Remote follow-ups. Months 1, 3, 6 and 12 by photo and WhatsApp, from Bogotá.

What does not change, wherever you have it done
Some things no city and no clinic can change, and it is worth being clear on them before you decide:
- Results take time. Transplanted hair usually sheds in the first weeks and starts to grow around month three or four. The result is judged at around 12 months.
- The donor area is limited. What is extracted does not grow back at the back of the head, so the plan has to think about the future too.
- A transplant does not stop loss in the hair that is not transplanted. If your hair loss is still active, you will likely need medical treatment alongside surgery. Ask your doctor which treatment is right for you.
The bottom line
If you live in Bogotá, the useful question is not "Bogotá or Medellín?" but "which team gives me the best plan, with the clearest price, and can I live with the way they handle follow-ups?" Sometimes the answer is in Bogotá. When it is in Medellín, the trip is short: a one-hour flight, one or two nights, and follow-ups from home.
